Signs your battery is weak
- Slow cranking in the morning, or a click with no start
- Start-stop stops working, often the first sign of a tired battery on European cars
- Several warning lights at once, such as ABS, steering and transmission messages
- “Battery discharged” or “12V battery service required” messages
- Electrical oddities like the radio resetting or windows losing auto-up
- A swollen or leaking battery case, or a sulfur smell near the battery
- The car died after sitting while you were away for a week or two
How we test the battery and charging system
- Battery test. We measure state of health and cold cranking ability with a digital battery tester and print the result.
- Charging test. We check alternator output at idle and under load, and look at the intelligent battery sensor data.
- Starter test. We measure cranking voltage and current draw.
- Parasitic drain check, if the battery goes flat while the car sits.
- Photos and a written estimate before we replace anything.
Batteries we fit
| Battery type | Found in |
|---|---|
| AGM | Most BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Porsche, Land Rover and Volvo models with start-stop |
| EFB | Some smaller models and earlier start-stop systems |
| Lithium-ion 12V | Some Porsche models and newer Teslas |
| Auxiliary battery | Many Mercedes-Benz models and some Land Rover models |
We match the battery’s type, capacity and size to the factory spec. Fitting a smaller or different type can confuse the charging system and shorten battery life.
Battery registration and coding
Most European cars use an intelligent battery sensor and a charging strategy that changes as the battery ages.
- BMW and MINI: Register the new battery in ISTA. If you change capacity or type, it must also be coded.
- Mercedes-Benz: Check main and auxiliary batteries and clear stored power faults with XENTRY.
- Audi and VW: Code the new battery’s serial number and type to the energy management module.
- Porsche, Land Rover, Jaguar and Volvo: Register or reset battery monitoring with factory-level tools.
- Exotics: Many Ferrari, Lamborghini and McLaren models need a battery maintainer when parked. We can check yours and set up a maintainer.
Tesla and EV 12V batteries
Electric cars still use a low-voltage battery to power the computers and close the high-voltage contactors. When it fails, the car may not unlock or wake. We replace Tesla 12V and lithium-ion low-voltage batteries and check the related software alerts. Rivian and Lucid models are welcome too.
Why South Florida heat shortens battery life
Most people think of cold weather killing batteries, but heat does more harm over time. High under-hood temperatures speed up corrosion and water loss inside the battery. Long idles on I-95 with the A/C on high drain power faster than the alternator can replace it at low RPM. Seasonal residents who leave a car for weeks often return to a flat battery. Salt air near the beach also corrodes terminals and grounds.
What to expect on your visit
Walk in at either shop. We test the battery and charging system, show you the results, and replace the battery after your approval. Registration and coding are part of the job, along with a check for stored faults afterward. If the car will not start at home, call the shop to schedule pickup with our concierge service.
