Volvo care in a hot, wet climate
Volvos are built in Sweden, and Broward is a long way from Swedish winters. Our heat is harder on cooling systems and batteries than cold is. The coolant expansion tank on the Drive-E engine is a common source of leaks here, and we see weak 12-volt batteries on many Volvos after a summer of short trips and full A/C.
Plug-in hybrids have their own climate demands. A Recharge T8 that runs mostly on electric power around Fort Lauderdale may rarely start its gas engine. Oil can sit for months and fuel can go stale. We look at both during service and recommend an oil change on time, even when the mileage is low.
Rain and flooding season also matter. Low-lying streets near the Intracoastal flood after heavy storms, and water can reach wiring and the rear drive unit on AWD models. If your Volvo went through standing water, have it checked before small faults grow.
Signs your Volvo needs a visit
- The oil level drops between changes, or the oil warning comes on.
- A sweet smell or a coolant warning after a drive.
- A hybrid system or battery warning on a Recharge model.
- An XC90 that sits low on one corner, or a harsh ride over bumps.
