Signs of a failing alternator
- A battery or charging warning light on the dash while you drive
- Dim or flickering headlights, especially at idle
- A battery that goes flat again a day or two after a jump start or a new battery
- A whining or grinding noise from the front of the engine that rises with engine speed
- Several warning lights at once on a European car, such as ABS, steering and transmission messages, as voltage drops
- A burning smell of hot wiring or a slipping belt
Signs of a failing starter
- A single click, or rapid clicking, when you turn the key or press start, with a charged battery
- The engine cranks slowly even though the battery tests good
- A grinding noise during starting
- The car starts some days and not others
- Start-stop that stops working, which on many cars is an early sign the starting system is struggling
How we test before we replace anything
- Battery test. We load test the battery first, because a weak battery causes many “alternator” and “starter” complaints.
- Charging test. We measure alternator output at idle and under load, check the belt and tensioner, and look for voltage drop in the cables.
- Starter circuit test. We check the starter draw, the ignition signal, the relay and the main cables and grounds. Corroded grounds are common on cars driven near the coast.
- Scan for faults. On European, exotic and electric models we read the charging and power-management modules with factory-level software such as BMW ISTA and Mercedes XENTRY.
- Photos and a written estimate. You see the test results and the failed part before you approve the repair.
After the repair
We fit an OEM or OE-equivalent alternator or starter, check the belt and connections, confirm the charging voltage and clear stored faults. If a new battery was needed, we register it to the car where the manufacturer requires it, so the charging system treats it as new. Repairs carry our 2-year / 24,000-mile warranty at both shops.
Why charging problems are common in South Florida
Heat is hard on batteries, alternators and the rubber belts that drive them. Short trips in traffic on I-95, Federal Highway and Oakland Park Boulevard, with the A/C on high, keep the electrical load heavy and leave little time to recharge. Cars that sit for weeks while their owners travel come back with flat batteries, and repeated deep discharges shorten battery life. Salt air near the beach corrodes cable ends and grounds, which can look like a failed starter. A quick charging-system test during an oil change catches most of these problems early.
Getting your car to us
If the car will not start, call the shop to schedule pickup with our concierge service. If it starts but shows a charging warning, drive straight to the nearest shop. Oakland Park, at 250 NE 44th St, is open 7 days and has after-hours drop-off with a key drop box at the front door. Fort Lauderdale, at 930 NE 4th Ave, is open Monday to Saturday.
