Signs your timing chain or belt needs attention
- A rattle at cold start that fades after a few seconds (timing chain)
- A check engine light with camshaft or crankshaft position or correlation codes
- Rough idle, misfires or a loss of power
- A ticking or slapping noise from the front of the engine
- Oil or coolant leaks near the timing cover or water pump
- A timing belt that is past its mileage or age interval in your maintenance schedule
How we confirm the problem
- Scan the engine computer with factory-level software, such as BMW ISTA, Mercedes XENTRY and ODIS-level tools for Audi and VW, and read the camshaft correlation values.
- Listen at cold start and use a stethoscope to find the source of the noise.
- Inspect the timing cover, tensioner and visible guides, and check for leaks.
- Photos and a written estimate before any work starts.
Timing chain jobs we do often
| Engine family | What usually fails |
|---|---|
| BMW N20, N26 and N47 | Timing chain guides and tensioner |
| BMW N63 and S63 V8 | Timing chains, guides and related oil and valve stem seal work |
| Audi and VW 2.0T (EA888) | Chain tensioner, guides and the chain |
| Mercedes-Benz M271, M274 and M276 | Chain stretch, camshaft adjusters, tensioner |
| Land Rover and Jaguar 5.0 V8 | Timing chain guides and tensioners |
| Porsche, Audi and VW V6 and V8 | Chain guides and tensioners on higher-mileage engines |
Timing belt replacement
On engines with a belt, we replace the belt, tensioner and idler pulleys, and usually the water pump and seals behind the cover at the same time. That saves you paying for the same labor twice later. We set the timing with the correct tools, check for leaks and road test the car.
After the repair
We replace the chain or belt with OEM or OE-equivalent parts, reset the engine adaptations, clear the codes and confirm the camshaft values on the scan tool. Repairs carry our 2-year / 24,000-mile warranty. Regular oil changes with the approved oil do the most to protect a timing chain, and a timing cover leak is a good time to fix nearby oil leaks.
