Battery and electrical work at the Oakland Park shop

A dead battery always seems to happen at the worst moment, so our Oakland Park shop is open seven days a week. The doors at 250 NE 44th St are open from 8 AM to 7 PM. Walk in, or call (954) 303-0758. Se habla español. If the car will not start at home, call the shop to schedule pickup with our concierge service, and if you can get it here after hours, there is a key drop box at the door and the lot never closes.

Signs your battery or charging system is failing

  • Slow, labored cranking on the first start of the day, worse after a weekend parked
  • A single click when you turn the key or press start, with the dash lights still on
  • Start-stop stops working, often the first warning on newer cars
  • Battery light on while driving, which usually means the alternator is not charging
  • Lights that dim at idle and brighten when you rev the engine
  • A burning smell or squeal from the front of the engine, often the belt or the alternator
  • A cluster of random warnings for steering, ABS and transmission at once, a classic low-voltage symptom
  • Corrosion on the terminals, or a battery case that has swollen in the heat

How we test before we replace

A new battery will not fix a bad alternator, and a good alternator cannot save a battery that is being drained overnight. We test the whole circuit.

  1. Battery test. A conductance test checks the battery’s health and remaining cranking power, and we compare it to the rating on the label.
  2. Starter draw. We measure voltage and current while the engine cranks. A starter that pulls too much points to wear inside the motor.
  3. Alternator output. We check charging voltage and current at idle and at higher RPM with lights and A/C on, and look for a weak diode on a scope.
  4. Parasitic drain test. With the car locked and asleep, we measure the current it draws. Anything above normal gets traced circuit by circuit.
  5. Cables and grounds. We inspect the main cables and the engine and body grounds, a common source of hard starts and flickering lights.
  6. Photos and a written estimate go to your phone before any part goes in.

Battery replacement done right

Battery size and type matter more than they used to. We fit the type your car was built for:

  • Flooded lead-acid batteries in many older and simpler cars
  • EFB (enhanced flooded) batteries in cars with basic start-stop
  • AGM batteries in most cars with advanced start-stop, heavy electrical loads or a battery under the seat or in the trunk
  • Lithium 12V batteries in some newer Tesla and performance models

We keep the car’s memory powered during the swap where needed, so radio presets, window settings and learned values are not lost. After fitting, we register or code the battery on the cars that need it and clear any voltage faults it left behind. Our Fort Lauderdale battery page covers European registration steps in detail.

Alternators and starters

When the charging test shows the alternator is weak, we replace it with a new or quality remanufactured unit and check the belt and tensioner while we are there. A starter that clicks, grinds or cranks slowly gets the same treatment. Some starters sit under the intake manifold or behind the transmission, which we explain in your estimate. More detail on our alternator and starter repair page.

Auto electrical repair

Electrical faults are a big part of our work in Oakland Park:

  • Power windows, locks and mirrors that work only some of the time
  • Headlights, taillights and turn signals, including LED and xenon units
  • Blown fuses that keep blowing, which means a short somewhere in the wiring
  • Rodent damage to harnesses, which is common in cars parked outdoors
  • Water leaks into the cabin that reach modules under seats and carpets
  • Aftermarket accessories such as remote starters, sound systems and dash cameras that were wired poorly
  • Key fob and immobilizer faults, and module programming and coding

We trace faults with wiring diagrams, a meter and a scope rather than replacing parts until the problem disappears. Module programming and key work are explained on our auto electrical and key programming page.

What South Florida does to batteries and wiring

Heat is the main reason batteries fail early here. A car parked in an open lot along Commercial Boulevard on a summer afternoon can have under-hood temperatures far above the air temperature, and that heat speeds up the wear inside the battery. Drivers often notice the problem in winter, when a battery weakened by summer finally lacks the power for a start.

Humidity and salt air add corrosion. Terminals grow white or green deposits, and connectors along the frame rails corrode, especially on cars that live near the beach in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea or Galt Ocean Mile. Flooding is the worst case. If a car has been in standing water deep enough to reach the floor, the modules, connectors and wiring under the carpet need inspection before the problems start appearing weeks later. Our flood-damaged car repair team handles those cars and the insurance paperwork.

Snowbirds and part-time residents should ask about a battery maintainer. A car parked for months in a garage will slowly drain, and a maintainer keeps the battery charged until you return.

EVs and hybrids

Electric and hybrid cars still have a 12V battery that powers the computers, locks and safety systems, and when it fails the car will not start or shift. We test and replace 12V batteries on Tesla, Toyota and Lexus hybrids, plug-ins and other EVs. See our EV and hybrid service page for more.

Warranty and how to reach us

Repairs carry our 2-year / 24,000-mile warranty, and our technicians are ASE-certified. Battery warranties follow the manufacturer’s terms, which we write on your invoice.

Look for us on NE 44th Street, which branches off Andrews Avenue in the stretch north of Oakland Park Boulevard, with Commercial Boulevard, Dixie Highway and I-95 all close by. For everything else we do here, see the Oakland Park shop page.

Questions drivers ask

Frequently asked questions

How long does a car battery last in South Florida?
Usually less than drivers expect. Heat speeds up the chemical wear inside a battery, so many batteries in Broward give out after about three years, sooner if the car sits in the sun or makes mostly short trips. We test yours at every visit and show you the result, so you can replace it before it strands you.
My car died twice this month, but the new battery tests fine. What is wrong?
Something is draining it or not recharging it. We measure the current the car draws with everything switched off, then pull fuses one at a time to find the circuit responsible. Common culprits are a module that will not go to sleep, an aftermarket alarm or dash camera, a glovebox or trunk light that stays on, or an alternator that is not charging fully.
Why does my car need the new battery registered?
Many newer cars, including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, VW, Volvo and some Ford and GM models, adjust how they charge the battery as it ages. If a new battery is not registered, the car keeps charging it like an old one, which shortens its life and can cause electrical faults. We register it with the right scan tool when we fit it.
