Engine Repair in Oakland Park, FL, for Overheating, Leaks and Misfires

Updated

Prestige Auto Repairs & Tires does engine repair in Oakland Park at 250 NE 44th St, open 7 days, 8 AM – 7 PM. We find out why an engine overheats, leaks oil, misfires or makes noise, using pressure, compression and scope tests, then send photos and a written estimate. Repairs range from hoses and gaskets to timing chains, head gaskets and replacement engines.

Engine repair at the Oakland Park shop

An engine that overheats, leaks or runs rough needs a proper diagnosis, and our Oakland Park shop does that seven days a week. Bring the car to 250 NE 44th St between 8 AM and 7 PM, including Sunday. Walk in, or call (954) 303-0758 and tell us what you are seeing, hearing or smelling. We speak English and Spanish. You can leave the car overnight and use the key box by the entrance, and if the engine should not be driven at all, call the shop to schedule pickup with our concierge service.

Engine problems we see most in Oakland Park

Overheating. The most urgent one in our climate. A failing water pump, a radiator fan that will not switch on, a cracked plastic coolant pipe or a stuck thermostat can push the gauge up in minutes when you are crawling along Oakland Park Boulevard on a summer afternoon. Turn off the A/C, turn the heater to full hot to pull heat away from the engine, and pull over safely if the gauge reaches the red. Our car overheating repair page covers the cooling system in more depth.

Oil leaks. Valve cover gaskets, oil filter housing gaskets, oil pan gaskets and rear main seals harden over years of heat cycles. Spots on the driveway, a burning smell at a red light on Dixie Highway or smoke from under the hood are the usual signs. More detail on our oil leak repair page.

Misfires and rough running. Worn spark plugs, failed coils and clogged injectors are the common causes, but a misfire that will not go away can also mean a burnt valve or low compression on one cylinder. If a misfire set your check engine light, our check engine light in Oakland Park page explains how we narrow it down.

Noises. A rattle at cold start that fades after a few seconds often means a stretched timing chain or weak tensioner. A tick that keeps time with engine speed can be a lifter, an exhaust manifold leak or an injector. A deep knock under load is the one to stop driving on.

Oil consumption and smoke. Blue smoke on start-up or after idling points to valve stem seals or piston rings. White smoke that smells sweet means coolant is burning, often a head gasket or a cracked head.

Turbo problems. Whistles, loss of power and oil in the intake pipes on turbocharged engines, which now include many everyday cars from Ford, Hyundai, Honda and VW, not only performance models.

How we diagnose an engine

We do not guess on engine work, because the parts and labour are too expensive to get wrong. Depending on the symptom, we use:

  • A full computer scan with freeze-frame data and live readings for fuel trims, misfire counts, coolant temperature and cam timing
  • Cooling system pressure test to find leaks that only appear when the system is hot and pressurized
  • Combustion leak test, which checks the coolant for exhaust gases, the clearest sign of a head gasket failure
  • Compression and leak-down tests to measure how well each cylinder seals
  • Borescope inspection, a camera through the spark plug hole to see the cylinder walls and piston tops
  • UV dye and a black light to trace slow oil and coolant leaks to their exact source
  • Smoke testing of the intake and crankcase for vacuum and boost leaks

You get photos and a written estimate before any repair, with what must be done now separated from what can wait.

Repairs we do

  • Water pumps, thermostats, radiators, fans, coolant hoses and expansion tanks
  • Valve cover, oil pan, timing cover and oil filter housing gaskets, and front and rear main seals
  • Spark plugs, ignition coils, fuel injectors and intake cleaning on direct-injection engines
  • Timing chains, guides and tensioners, and timing belts with water pumps. See our timing chain and belt replacement page
  • Head gaskets, cylinder head resurfacing and valve work
  • Turbochargers, intercooler pipes and boost leaks
  • Engine mounts that let the engine shake at idle or clunk when shifting
  • Remanufactured or used engine replacement when repair does not make sense

We work on every make: Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, Ford, Chevrolet, Jeep and Ram, as well as BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Porsche, Land Rover and exotic cars. Our Fort Lauderdale engine repair page lists the engine faults we see most on European models.

Why South Florida engines work harder

Engines here run hot more of the year than in most of the country. The radiator handles engine heat and A/C condenser heat at the same time, in high air temperatures, often at walking pace on Commercial Boulevard or Federal Highway. Plastic cooling parts and rubber gaskets age faster under that load, which is why we see so many water pump, coolant pipe and valve cover leaks.

Short trips are another factor. Many Oakland Park drivers cover a few miles at a time, which never lets the oil get hot enough to drive off moisture and fuel. Sludge and timing chain wear follow, especially when oil changes stretch too long. A severe-service oil change in Oakland Park schedule is the simplest protection.

Flooded streets after summer storms create the worst engine damage we see. If water reaches the air intake, the engine can pull it into the cylinders and bend connecting rods. If your car stalled in water, do not try to restart it. Call us first.

Warranty and next steps

Engine repairs carry our 2-year / 24,000-mile warranty, and our technicians are ASE-certified. We are RepairPal Certified, and if your car has an extended service contract, we document the failure with the photos and test results the administrator needs.

Our building sits on NE 44th Street near Andrews Avenue, in the block between the Oakland Park Boulevard and Commercial Boulevard corridors, a short drive from Dixie Highway and the I-95 exits. Drivers come from Wilton Manors, Coral Ridge, Imperial Point, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea and Pompano Beach. For every other service here, see the Oakland Park shop page.

Questions drivers ask

Frequently asked questions

My temperature gauge climbs in traffic but drops on the highway. What does that mean?
That pattern usually points to airflow at low speed: a radiator fan that is not switching on, a fan relay or module, or a radiator clogged with debris on the outside. At highway speed, air rushing through the grille hides the problem. We check fan operation, coolant level and pressure, and radiator temperature differences to find it before the engine is damaged.
Is a small oil leak worth fixing?
Often yes, even if you only add oil now and then. Oil dripping onto a hot exhaust can smoke or catch fire, oil on rubber engine mounts and hoses softens them, and some leaks get faster over time. We clean the area, add dye if needed and photograph the source so you can decide based on what is actually leaking and how fast.
How do you decide between repairing my engine and replacing it?
We start with tests, not opinions. Compression, leak-down, a borescope look inside the cylinders and an oil analysis tell us how healthy the rest of the engine is. If the bottom end is sound, a targeted repair usually makes sense. If wear is widespread, we quote a remanufactured or used engine next to the repair and explain the trade-offs, including what the car is worth.
